Laid off IT workers flee Silicon Valley
Something big is happening in the gilded world of information technology. The unemployment rate has climbed to 12 percent in Silicon Valley, and jobless workers are abandoning IT and trying to move into other fields, including healthcare.
Is the golden age coming to an end, for high-tech employees in Silicon Valley?
It's hard to say, but the Wall Street Journal is reporting that job centers and community colleges across the region are seeing a surge in enrollment by out-of-work techies.
One recent survey showed that only a few segments of Silicon Valley's economy are growing, reports the Journal. Employment in the local healthcare sector rose more than 4 percent. The clean-energy industry registered a 12 percent increase in the second quarter.
