Know when it's time to move your data center

It has been projected that a majority of U.S. companies will expand or relocate their data centers by 2010. How can you tell if your company should be one of them?

CIO.com has offered a list of warnings that were compiled by David Rosenbaum, the editor The Bloom Group. For those of you looking for serious answers, forget it. The list is made for laughs, modeled after David Letterman's top 10 list. Here are a few samples.

So, how do you know when you need a new data center?

- When procurement can't keep up with the demand for duct tape.

- When there are several generations of field mice nesting in the wiring.

- When data center staff wears battery-operated head lamps because every time they turn on the lights, the fuses blow.

- Your back-up generator is a team of hamsters running on a wheel.

All kidding aside, it's important to evaluate your data center periodically to make sure it's located in the proper place, and that it continues to do 100 percent of the work for you at all times. - Judi
