IT trends for 2010
Tyler Newton, the head of research at Catalyst Investors, has looked into his crystal ball and come up with some insights into the future of IT as we approach a new decade. Newton's company conducts research on growth industries and invests in businesses that have recurring, advertising or subscription-based revenue.
In Forbes.com, Newton lists and comments on some big IT trends which he expects to capitalize on. Here are a few of his picks:
- Cloud computing software will grow. Content will continue to migrate to the cloud, including data used on consumer devices. Business applications will allow access to more real-time information.
- Social networking will move into new networks and information streams will focus around common interests, whether it's for work, hobbies or issue advocacy.
- The functionality of smart phones and other wireless access devices will keep increasing. Wireless networks will dramatically increase the amount of data capacity and will at least rival the speeds of today's DSL lines.
- The web gets smart, really smart. As more information flows through the Internet, sophisticated algorithmic models will aid interpretation and decision making. It will increasingly enhance business intelligence and the speed with which managers and marketers react to changes in the business environment.
- Internet-connected sensors will measure all sorts of data including our vital signs, energy usage, soil moisture, traffic patterns and manufacturing efficiency.
