Is your photocopier a security risk?

Companies go to great lengths to protect their data and networks from security breaches, but photocopiers? Apparently, photocopiers actually can be a data security risk because of their built-in hard drives. Therefore, these machines can retain the data being scanned. If companies don't take steps to ensure that the data on the copier's disk is protected with encryption or an overwrite mechanism, someone with malicious motives and access to the machine can obtain sensitive information from original documents. To combat the problem, some copier makers such as Sharp and Xerox are adding security features. In fact, Sharp began offering a security kit for its machines to encrypt and overwrite the images being scanned a few years ago.
