Is the CIO a dinosaur?

Your job as a CIO is probably different than it was yesterday and it likely will be different tomorrow. Ian Campbell, CEO of Nucleus Research, has a pretty good take on the CIO position that is forever evolving. "The CIO is dead," he told InformationWeek. That may be an exaggeration, but Campbell points to many of the changes that have altered the role of the CIO:

  • More and more CIOs are reporting to the CFO these days. "The job is being brought down, not brought up," he said.
  • Technology decisions are being taken out of the CIO's hands and are being handled instead by line-of-business managers.
  • CIO budgets are shrinking.
  • The CIO position is moving in two different directions, depending on your employer. It might be called an infrastructure manager or technology visionary. "And neither warrants a C-level title," Campbell said.

While it may be too hard to read the tea leaves right now, Campbell predicted, "The CIO is in for a tough couple of years." What do you think? Is the CIO position becoming a dinosaur? Let us know in the comments.
