IPv6 is running out of time

IPv6 is a failure so far in its efforts to expand the Internet before it runs out of IP addresses by 2012.

A new study from the web monitoring company Pingdom showed that only 4 percent of the Internet supports IPv6 despite the U.S. government mandating the technology for its systems. And that could spell real trouble if Internet users and providers don't work harder to make this change happen.

"Generally speaking, if you look at the current state of things, adoption will have to be sped up significantly over the coming 2-3 years. At the current rate, we'll have IPv6 fully deployed a decade or so later than when we need it," a Pingdom spokesman told Techworld.com.
