Internet traffic rates stagnant

Comcast and even Bell Canada have been trying to manage data flows over their networks and claim that they are being flooded and facing congestion from high volumes of traffic. But University of Minnesota researchers report that Internet traffic growth rates are actually stagnant or falling.

The Minnesota Internet Traffic Studies (MINTS) project, headed by Andrew Odlyzko, found that "there is not a single sign of an unmanageable flood of traffic. If anything, a slowdown is visible more than a speed-up. This suggests that the industry might benefit from shifting its emphasis towards methods of stimulating traffic growth."

The report, outlined on Arstechnica, found that the 2007-2008 growth numbers are some of the weakest in recent memory.
