Intel unveils six-core server chips

Intel has launched the new Xeon 7400 family of processors. Code-named 'Dunnington', it comes in quad- and six-core versions, and is based on the Caneland platform. The expectation is that these Dunnington processors will deliver up to 50 percent more performance per watt compared to the earlier 65 nanometer Xeon 7300s. In addition, this launch marks the completion of the Xeon's transition toward 45 nanometer process technology. Intel says that seven variants of the chip will be offered, three of them with six cores, and the remainder being quad-core units. Low-powered versions of each are offered, which consumes just 65 watts and 50 watts respectively. All the cores have access to 16MB of shared L3 cache.
