Intel plans quad-core chips for high-end Desktop
Intel announced earlier this week that the first processors based on the new Nehalem microarchitecture would be quad-core chips for use on high-end desktops and lower-end two-socket servers. Though the new Nehalem-based processors will carry the familiar "Core" branding, the first of these chips will be called the Core i7 and marketed at gamers and creative professionals. Intel has declined to discuss details pertaining to the Core i7 until the its Developer Forum in San Francisco next week. What is known at the moment is that the chip will feature an integrated memory controller and a new "breakthrough feature" that supposedly will deliver high performance and energy efficiency. The Core i7 is scheduled to ship in the fourth quarter of this year.
