Intel chairman plans to retire

Craig Barrett, the chairman of the Intel Corp, said he plans to retire in May. Barrett, 69, steered the chip maker through the dot-com collapse and has become a high-profile advocate for expanding computing in the developing world. Barrett joined Intel 35 years ago, becoming chief executive in 1998 for seven years. He will retire after having served three years as chairman.

The company said Jane Shaw, a former pharmaceutical industry executive who has served on Intel's board since 1993, would succeed Barrett. Barrett sustained Intel's aggressive investments in its factories during the prolonged slump that followed the dot-com slump, creating cutting-edge factories that have been critical for the company to maintain its advantage over rivals.

Intel is the world's largest semiconductor company, with 80 percent of the world's market for microprocessors.
