IEEE prepares to launch gigabit Wi-Fi project
Even as the IEEE working group is putting the finishing touches on the much-delayed 802.11n wireless standard, it is moving to launch a new project to usher in gigabit Wi-Fi. The Very High Throughput Study Group was formed last year, and currently is looking at tapping into the high-frequency 60GHz band for transfers over short distances, and the under 6GHz band for ranges comparable to that of 802.11a and 11n. A finalized proposal will be put forth this week for acceptance by the 802.11 Working Group, which overseas the WLAN standard. If approved, a new task group would be created to get the actual standard crafted.
