ID thieves hard at work in '09

Identity thieves haven't taken a break in the new year. So far in 2009, U.S. businesses and organizations have logged at least 83 security breaches so far this year, exposing the records of more than 1 million people. According to a new study from the Identity Theft Resource Center it looks like it could be another banner year for data breaches, reports eSecurityPlanet.com.

In 2008, the numbers didn't look good, either. Over 600 businesses, government agencies and organizations suffered from breaches, an increase of 47 percent from 2007. These numbers are only expected to grow in 2009.

What's more, hackers are becoming increasingly sophisticated. It is also worth noting that ID theft was highest in three states that were among the hardest hit by home foreclosures: Arizona, California and Florida.
