How to translate geek speak
Sometimes it seems like geek slang is overtaking English among software programmers. If you find it challenging to know what the developers who work for you are talking about, take a look at this glossary of programmer jargon, by eWeek's Darryl Taft. Some of the more illuminating entries include:
Bug Bait: "Programming practices that encourage, rather than discourage, program flaws."
Duck: "A feature added for no other reason than to draw management attention and a directive that it be removed, thus avoiding unnecessary changes in other aspects of the product."
Bugfoot: "A bug that isn't reproducible and has been sighted by only one person."
Baklava Code: "Code with too many layers."
Mortgage Code: "Code purposely so terrible that only you can maintain it, forcing your employer to keep you, thus providing job security (so you can pay your mortgage)."
