How to make data mapping work

A data map--a consolidated system that tracks the contents of multiple databases--is a great idea, but it's not for the faint of heart. It will take lots of hard work to make it possible, but in the end, you will have a solid way to track what's in your databases.

Data mapping is especially important for issues like eDiscovery, or for the merger or sale of your company. And it's far better than rifling through millions of gigabytes of information, which is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

One piece of advice: You have to keep it up and maintain it, and that costs money. You also need a lot of users to make data mapping worth it.
