How to keep IT talent happy and save money
Here's a way you might keep your IT talent happy and cut the department's budget at the same time: Let your staffers skip the commute.
More than a third of IT pros recently surveyed by Dice said that they would take a 10 percent cut in pay if they were allowed to work from home full-time, reports Lance Whitney at CNET. With gas prices going through the roof, telecommuting stands to save employees considerable cash, not to mention time.
The findings are not novel, however. A similar survey by Dice three years ago found almost the same sentiment. Nonetheless, few employers post job openings that suggest working from home is an option. Of the 160,000 or so jobs posted on the Dice site this month, a mere 500--not even 1 percent--mention telecommuting, Whitney notes.
Permitting telecommuting could give companies a larger set of candidates to consider, particularly in certain fields with employee shortages, suggests Dice's managing director Alice Hill. However, there remains considerable ambivalence among IT leaders about letting their employees telecommute. "[M]aybe if we called it cloud commuting, CIOs would buy in," she said.
