How CIOs can motivate their workers

It's hard enough just doing your job as CIO, but there is one task you need to include in your job description: How to motivate your workers. Most of the techniques in play these days were established by older generations--the Baby Boomers in particular. But the thinking of younger generations--Generation Xers and Millennials--is decidedly different. And your job is even harder because there will be a continued shortage of technically competent employees. One of the key issues for younger workers is that they are often socially responsible, and they want to work for companies that are, too. That may mean offering opportunities for community service or special volunteer programs, going green or devoting time and resources to creating a better world. So, remember that creating a positive work environment must be far more extensive than a free cup of coffee in the lunchroom or offering other traditional perks. At the end of the day, a workplace with a social conscience may mean a much happier new generation workforce--which could be worth its weight in gold.
