Hospital boosts security for EMR

Miami Children's Hospital, like many of its ilk, is in the process of deploying electronic medical records technology. As it prepares to replace its older systems and applications, the hospital is updating its network to enhance security, reports Ellen Messmer at NetworkWorld.

Part of the security enhancement effort involves increasing use of an access control appliance from ForeScout CounterAct, Messmer writes. The appliance, which is used to prevent malware and control access to the network, examines policy-based behavior and compliance on networked computers. The hospital requires that C drives are locked down so that sensitive data cannot be written to them.

The hospital is using specialized VLANs to separate medical imaging equipment for security reasons. If activity on a machine is non-compliant, CounterAct can automatically move it onto a specialized VLAN. If visitors to the hospital want to use their own computers, CounterAct moves them to a VLAN that offers Internet access but prevents them from seeing the electronic records system.
