Leading an IT team effectively means recognizing the mood of the group and being able to manage the conflicts that afflict even the most well-run teams. Managing the emotional needs of a team isn't easy, but it's the key to success. First, identify any tensions within the team and discuss them as a group. Watch out for emotionally loaded statements, generalizations or a lack of interest. Then ask team members with complaints for specifics. Secondly, establish ground rules for the discussion, addressing how the team will handle complaints, how it will discuss contrary perspectives and what the team will do when energy levels run low.
