It may not be the most technically advanced approach but experts say that taking a hammer to old drives and disks headed for the garbage is the best way to make sure that any data housed on the devices doesn't get into the wrong hands. It seems that some smart criminals have been buying discarded PCs and servers and pulling confidential and valuable data off of the drives that allows them to access networks and financial accounts. Not only do these drives house confidential information, they oftentimes contain employee data, cell phone info and even invoice documents. That's why the best disposal method is the one that destroys any potential for getting into the hard drive, say experts.
