Group dynamics: The golden team
There's nothing quite like a team that works well together. This type of "golden team"--a group of people who can achieve more together than on their own--is rare, but truly golden. Each brings something unique and necessary to the whole. So how do you create a golden team? A good manager can encourage a golden team to form if the ingredients are in place. But "strategic direction" doesn't seem to make a difference, and a golden team doesn't tend to form when a manager makes authoritative decisions by decree. Rather, they seem most likely to form when the manager creates an atmosphere of consensus and the sense that it's safe to propose a stupid idea. Also, the golden team is not necessarily more effective outside of its own circle of influence. These teams are also fragile; if someone leaves, it can fall apart.
