Google CEO resigns from Apple board

Google CEO Eric Schmidt is resigning from Apple's board, the company announced Monday morning. The move comes as the Federal Trade Commission is reviewing board ties between Google and Apple, reports the Washington Post.

Last week, the FTC sent letters to Apple and its partner, AT&T, questioning why Google's voice service had been removed from the iPhone. This latest action follows statements from the Obama administration that they were ramping up enforcement of anticompetitive practices.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs explained the decision for Schmidt to step down: "Eric's effectiveness as an Apple board member will be significantly diminished since he will have to recuse himself from even larger portions of our meetings due to potential conflicts of interest," Jobs said in a press release. "Therefore, we have mutually decided that now is the right time for Eric to resign his position on Apple's Board."
