Good asset management means planning well

Before investing in IT asset management software, make sure you've defined your business processes and policies. Without doing so, you'll be flying blind. And don't be put off by the initial up-front investment; investing in a good asset management tool can save your company real money over time. When it's time to make a choice, investigate all of your choices carefully, because not all are alike. Different products have different features: some are more solution-in-a-box while others are more customizable.

Excellent point about looking to your processes when selecting an IT asset management tool. All too frequently I see IT managers rushing into purchasing a tool without applying the proper due diligence to this important software purchase. We would get upset with any of our users purchasing software in such a haphazard way but then we turn around and do it ourselves. Remember, a tool can only provide information - you need to provide the processes and knowledge to complete the process.
