Going VoIP in an open source fashion

Moving from a PBX system to Voice over Internet Protocol isn't huge news these days as the Internet platform is taking root all over. But what is news is how one university is taking it a bit further and going open source. Sam Houston State University in Texas is deploying VoIP on Asterisk, and moving 6,000 users off its Cisco CallManager IP PBXs and a legacy Nortel Meridian PBX system to Linux. The school's tech leaders took the plunge for several reasons:  better security and network management, as well as an opportunity to reduce costs.
