Going from being a cost center to a revenue driver

A company's IT department has long been viewed as a cost center--a drain on resources and revenues with no tangible return-on-investment. But that view is quickly changing, with tech leaders aligning IT to the business and making a strong case for an IT department that is inextricably bound to business. Some IT organizations are actually taking things a step further by incorporating internal IT as actual business units, selling services and products outside of the organization. Using this approach, IT can become a revenue center and while there were plenty of doubters and pessimists when the trend initially took off, lots of minds are being changed about the opportunity for such a business venture. In fact, as some experts note, it's presenting a whole new world of entrepreneurial opportunity for the enterprise.
