General Electric won't say exactly when or where it happened, but the company is alerting 50,000 former and current employees about the theft of a laptop that housed confidential data including employee names and Social Security numbers. The laptop was stolen from a locked hotel room sometime earlier this month. So far the information hasn't been used in a malicious manner, says GE. The company believes the thief was likely just after the device, not the data.
