Gartner: PC shipments to grow 20 percent in 2010

PCs are getting more popular every day, driven by mobile PCs and netbooks, according to a new Gartner forecast. The company raised its worldwide PC shipment forecast for this year, predicting growth of 20 percent compared to 2009. The research firm estimates that PC shipments will total 366 million units in 2010.

"The PC industry will be overwhelmingly driven by mobile PCs, thanks to strong home growth in both emerging and mature markets," said George Shiffler, research director at Gartner, in a statement.

The world is definitely going mobile. Mobile devices accounted for 55 percent of all PC shipments in 2009, and will account for close to 70 percent of shipments by 2012, Gartner said.

Meanwhile, desktop PC shipments are on the decline and will be used primarily in emerging markets.

It's important for IT executives to pay attention to these trends. Why refresh your hardware when you can replace it with mobile devices? Why not move to a more mobile workplace that is likely to deliver faster and better services to your customers?
