Forget about a raise this year

It's a rough year everywhere, so rough in fact that the typical IT staffer isn't getting a raise this year. In Washington, IT workers did get a tiny hike--less than 3 percent. In biotech, IT pay is growing, but that's about the only place where raises are coming through, according to Information Week's annual IT salary survey.

The survey is based on responses from over 12,000 IT professionals in the United States, and the findings were grim. The typical IT manager in investment banking made $12,000 less this year because his bonuses shrank. The survey found a median increase in total compensation--salary and cash bonuses--of just .7 percent with IT managers receiving a 1.6 percent increase. The median income reported by IT staffers is $80,000. For IT managers, it's $105,000.

The economic climate has other complications, too. IT unemployment is at its highest level since 2004. Only 37 percent of those surveyed considered their positions to be very secure, compared to more than half last year.
