With football season upon us, working nights or weekends can be particularly grueling for NFL fans. But fear not, there's an app for that, too.  If road warriors find themselves en route during a big game, they can stay tuned with the free Sports Pro Football app from CBS Interactive, which delivers play-by-play news, scores and stats to a variety of smartphones. InformationWeek's Benjamin Tomkins describes this and 19 other mobile apps for football fans.

The NFL Sunday Ticket To-Go app from DirecTV delivers every play of every game to the iPhone, Android and Blackberry. An app from the NFL Players Association allows fans to follow players on Twitter, even though the NFL prohibits players from tweeting during games, just before and just after. The Fan's Football Guide from Incelligence provides explanations of the rules, a glossary of 300 terms and the history of every team in the NFL. 

There is a wide variety of team-specific apps as well, including 10 just for the Green Bay Packers. However, most of these apps provide games, wallpaper, audio and video "that pimp out your phone for your team and that's where they stop," writesTomkins.
