Finding the right person for the right task
If you don't know exactly what skills your staff has or what skills the business needs to move forward, you can't meet the business's demands. Consider creating a skills framework, which will give IT directors a better understanding of the roles and skills in the department while making clear what skills are needed and helping improve the way the company manages and develops the capabilities of its IT staff. There are several frameworks available today, including the Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA), which is tracked on a grid, with the columns representing the relevant skills for each job function arranged under different categories. The framework measures personal skills, business skills and levels of competence. What's more, a good skills framework offers IT staff a sort of map of what they need to learn to move ahead, and it can provide the IT department with valuable information to ensure that everyone is being compensated fairly.
