More details have emerged about the Dropbox breach that took place last weekend. According to a report on TechCrunch, fewer than 100 accounts were affected by the programming error that allowed anyone to log into any of the site's 25 million accounts without a password. All the breached accounts were apparently accessed by a single individual. No details were given about affected accounts, though since Dropbox relies on email addresses for account usernames, it's possible that prominent people with known email addresses could have been targeted.

TechCrunch published a letter from Dropbox CEO Drew Houston to affected users, where he apologized for the lapse and offered free access to a credit monitoring service and a phone number to speak with him.

While this isolated incident is unlikely to sway die-hard users from the popular online storage service, it's a reminder to CIOs of the importance of data encryption. In addition, businesses may want to reexamine whether they're inadvertently storing confidential or unprotected information on cloud systems.
