Feds say they are ready to take on IPv6
With little last-minute scrambling on the part of various agencies, CIO, or networking staff, the June 30 deadline for IPv6 compatibility has come and gone without much fanfare. All agencies are expected to file the IPv6 test results promptly, even as industry experts note that federal IPv6 requirements are not difficult to fulfill. Still, government officials admit that this is only the start of a long journey to actually transitioning to IPv6 in the face of a rapidly dwindling pool of available IP addresses. IPv4 allows for only 4.3 billion individually addressed devices on the network, while its touted replacement, IPv6, gives more than 10 billion times more.
