Facebook expands security to thwart phishing attack
Facebook, the popular social networking site used by many professionals, has been having security problems. This is a growing concern for CIOs who must always be on the alert for any breaches that could impact their systems. Last week, Facebook announced it will expand its use of MarkMonitor AntiFraud Solutions to fight the latest phishing attacks that have threatened the site and its users.
"Our deep commitment to the safety of our users requires a strong proactive security strategy, best-of-breed technology, and active engagement with industry leaders," Ryan McGeehan, threat analyst at Facebook, said in a statement.
Facebook users have come under attack from FBaction.net, which sent messages telling them to check out a link that takes them to a fake Facebook page requiring a login with user names and passwords. Once the fake program grabs this information, it hacks into users' accounts and re-sends the link to all their friends, saying "Look at this!" reports InformationWeek. Facebook has blocked the scam website from being shared on its network. With some 200 million users, even a small percentage of infections could spiral out of control.
