Even cybercriminals are hit by recession

A German software company detected a 30 percent drop in the number of unique malware signatures between May and June, a development that it attributes to the economic downturn. G Data argues that digital criminals may have less money to invest in generating malware, and that may be the reason for the decline in illegal activity.

"The black economy operates according to demanding economic criteria: Supply and demand define business. The global economic crisis has not left the e-crime economy untouched," said Ralf Benzmüller of G Data in an official release.

The number of malware samples detected by the company in June fell to 83,072 from 123,581 in May.
