Equinix can't build data centers fast enough near D.C.
Data centers are hot these days. Just take a look at data center company Equinix, which is building its sixth complex in the Washington, D.C. area. The latest data center will cost $100 million, according to an article in the Washington Post. And the 152,000-square-foot facility will be located on the same campus as Equinix's five other data centers in Ashburn, Va.
It's a growth industry for Equinix, a 10-year-old company that expects to bring in $860 million in revenues this year, a 25 percent jump compared with the previous year. "The data-center sector is growing very, very rapidly," Dan Golding, an analyst who follows the data-center industry at Tier 1 Research, told the Washington Post. "The only thing preventing explosive growth is the credit crunch."
The government and telecommunications companies are Equinix's biggest customers, and their needs continue to grow. "You almost can't build fast enough," Steve Smith, Equinix's chief executive, told the Washington Post.
