E-government hinges on CIO role

The digital evolution of the U.S. government is no small task, and given the ever-changing technologies and user expectations, it's likely never going to be "done," but rather it will be an ongoing process. As some experts point out, this poses some hefty challenges for federal CIOs, and unless they get the ability to participate in business operations and the full command of technologies in play, it's going to be a tough haul and the government and users will suffer the consequences. The CIO, in the digital evolution movement, must be in charge, ahead of the curve on technology, involved in business processes and given more power to make true e-government happen.
