Don't get rid of the boomers yet
![]()

This week we report on an article about the impact that baby boomers will have on the workplace when they retire. And if you are not ready for this seismic change, you are in trouble because baby boomers make up a large segment of the workforce, and bring years of experience and knowledge to the job that may not be easily replaced.
The good news for companies is that many baby boomers are delaying retirement because of today's economic conditions. And many companies seem willing to sweeten the pot to keep boomers on the job.
But whatever your company's situation, it's important to keep tabs on what the boomers know and how their departure will affect your shop. Don't just think that IT employees are interchangeable, because they are not. And don't just presume that a boomer will provide all the information needed to keep the ship afloat because he won't unless asked.
Every IT manager needs a plan that takes into account the impact a boomer will have when he leaves the office. And the plan must include ways to keep critical information in house by using exiting boomers as mentors to the newer employees. It is critical to store this valuable information before it is lost. You also could retain your retired boomer as a consultant, a move that could be expensive but well worth it.
If anything, all of this should tell you that the baby boom generation has seen a lot. These employees have been on the ground floor of the technology revolution, and should not be escorted to the exit without capturing some of that knowledge. - Judi
