Don't forget about your IT budget

It's time to start thinking about next year's IT budget. Mike Schaffner, who directs information technology for the Value and Measurement Group of Cameron in Houston, offers a few tips in Forbes on efficient ways to deal with your budgeting process. It includes a number of pointers that you may not currently have in your process. Among them:

  • Break down your budget into meaningful areas so you can understand where the money is going.
  • Explain the various functions and why each is important.
  • Give options for cutting costs and services.
  • What's the driving force behind your budget? Breaking even? Making a profit?
  • Show the value IT can bring to your company.

The bean-counters at your company are probably pouring over your budget, too. Make your case as strong as you can with details on how IT can empower the company to move forward.
