Disaster recovery isn't enough

By now, virtually all corporations have good disaster recovery plans in place. But that may not be enough. Without proper coordination by the IT department looking to put the pieces back again, efforts may fall flat. IT departments should have their own plans in case of corporate-wide disaster that allow teams to coordinate their work, share documents and keep up to speed on what everyone involved is doing. That way, overlap is avoided and more progress can be made. Consider building a portal containing all key information, such as plans, contacts, a discussion forum, support services for travel and videoconferencing, a calendar and a method of sharing documents and information easily. Team members can post their current work and access the company's document management system. Before investing in new tools, however, see what value you can bring by building a small portal with existing tools and technologies already used in the company. And don't go overboard: just make sure the basics are there, plus good work processes, good people processes and plenty of trust.
