A different take on the "Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies" (chart)

In anticipation of the annual "Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies" chart expected soon from Gartner, CIO's Thomas Wailgum charts his own grid of technologies that are hot and those that are not. 

At the pinnacle of Wailgum's "Peak of Inflated Expectations" is "Cloud Cloud Cloud Cloud Cloud [and so on]." Not far from the cloud on the curve, in Wailgum's view, are rogue IT, Twitter Uptime and China. 

Synergy and Paperless Office are relegated to the lower depths of the "Trough of Disillusionment." On the more positive end, ERP and Facebook are positioned as having reached the "Plateau of Productivity."
