The Department of Homeland Security has extended the period for Optional Practical Training from 12 to 29 months. OPT certification allows foreign students to work in the United States without an H-1B visa for a limited amount of time. This will allow non-immigrant students with degrees in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics to work in the United States. That's good news for CIO and IT executives who are finding it tough to find qualified IT staffers in the current pool of workers. "This rule will enable businesses to attract and retain highly skilled foreign workers, giving U.S. companies a competitive advantage in the world economy," said Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. "By extending the training period by an additional 17 months… we are further ensuring a legal workforce in the U.S. and aiding good corporate citizens."
