Are IT leaders born or made? Experts say that the truth lies somewhere in the middle, but even introverts can become successful CIOs if they have the right stuff. Successful IT leaders have the self-assurance to know their own style and what works for them, as well as the confidence to hire employees who can develop their own leadership abilities. They also have to be able to inspire others, demonstrate success, lead the way and advance the careers of people who work for them. Other important skills are the ability to set and communicate a vision for the IT organization, the know-how to market and sell that vision to internal and external stakeholders, and the charisma to motivate.
