Even at the CIO level, you're held accountable to others--certainly the CEO, and often, other C-level officers, such as the CFO or CTO. Making sure that you get along with these key players means understanding their expectations, communicating effectively and dealing with their inevitable quirks. Your relationship with the CEO is of the highest importance, of course, which means you have to stay on his or her radar and remain visible as much as possible. What's more, you should make sure that the CEO is engaged and interested in technology, while you should be as engaged and interested in the business. The same goes for other C-level execs, whether you report to them or have a dotted-line relationship.
