In what will likely go down as one of the most damaging security breaches in a long time, the the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has revealed that thieves have stolen disks holding data on 26 million clients. The data includes social security numbers, addresses and birth dates and was taken from the home of an employee who had taken the disks home for a project. While the incident occurred earlier this month, it wasn't publicly revealed until yesterday and agency officials say there is no evidence the data is being used for illegal gain.
