Data deduplication: an IT department's secret weapon
A recent study from IDC confirms what many of us already suspected: that the amount of digital data will grow exponentially over the next several years. Forward-thinking CIOs have already put a great deal of thought into how to manage and store that data. When planning your data management strategy, don't discount deduplication--a method of reducing storage needs by eliminating redundant data. This method helps to intelligently categorize data and to move most of it to less expensive, high-density arrays while keeping only the minimum on more expensive devices. Vendors have rushed to fill this space including Quantum's StorNext, which manages data across different storage tiers. Another top deduplication vendor is Data Doman.
