First it was a rash of laptop thefts, in which thieves got their hands on customer data and information. Then a company actually emailed out confidential data. Now another company has admitted that it has inadvertently dumped disk tapes containing valuable and confidential information on over 2 million customers--into a landfill. Chase Card Services is busy notifying impacted clients of the snafu. The good news is that the tapes were in a locked box that mistakenly went into the trash. And as things are typically crushed and crunched in the disposal process, the company isn't worried that the data will end up in criminal hands. But it clearly faces a huge issue with regards to customer trust.
