Competition for IT staff is fierce
IT specialists--even those fresh out of college--aren't having too much trouble finding work these days. Although that's good news for employees, it can create real headaches for CIOs who must not only find ways to entice qualified IT staff, but keep them happy enough to stay put. The areas where competition is fiercest for IT staff include security, networking, development and any position that interacts with customers, such as IT and business analysis. To attract qualified IT employees, don't be stingy with salaries, but offer other perks as well when appropriate. Similarly, hold on to good employees by offering good raises and creating opportunities for them to learn and advance.
