Companies plan bigger investment in green IT

Green technology is quickly becoming a reality as more and more companies see it as a necessity and a smart way to save money. A recent Symantec survey of 1,052 companies found that most of them, 92 percent, said green IT should play a major role in minimizing a company's environmental footprint. A recent InfoWorld article also says that 81 percent of those surveyed have a "green advocate" who manages the company's environmental efforts, often with a focus on technology.

IT executives are a smart group of people. They know that going green will help them save money--particularly by cutting cooling costs--and they understand that a significant investment is necessary in order to make green work for their business. The real question is, how far are they willing to go? Are they willing to spend money for datacenter virtualization projects or desktop power management? Are they willing to throw out prior plans for more streamlined ones, even if it means they will have to spend money now in order to save money in the long run? And are they willing to running their office in a completely new way?

Whatever the answers to these questions, it's clear that green is here to stay. And it's time for IT departments to understand this movement and learn how to save money by embracing green.
