The coming challenges for data centers

The owner's manual is still being written for data centers, and now there's new thinking on data center cooling. Some IT execs are running data centers hotter without any problems. Microsoft, however doesn't appear to be taking any chances. The company has built two massive data centers in Chicago and Dublin, Ireland. These will rely on the naturally cold air of those environments to cool the data centers as much as possible rather than using chillers.

Another data center trend is to locate the facilities in low-cost locations rather than expensive parts of the country where labor and rent are much higher. There are many new theories and ideas for making data centers work in 2010.
