Cloud computing: A boon or bust for IT jobs?
Cloud computing is clearly coming into its own, offering new opportunities for companies to save money, increase performance and spur innovation. But the impact could lead to a loss of IT jobs as companies use these new tools to consolidate and streamline operations. In effect, notes a story on GigaOM.com, "virtualization and cloud computing let IT departments do a lot more with a lot less."
While some companies may use the cost savings to make new IT investments and shift workloads, it also may mean the exit for some schooled in the old ways of doing things. Of course, it could also mean employment opportunities for those with the new skills. In other words, today's system administrators are not likely to get the new Web 2.0 jobs.
