CIOs must be great leaders, not managers

CIOs should know technology and how to manage, but some top people in the field believe it has become more important to be a business leader. Executives at a recent CIO leadership conference in Boston said CIOs must lead by envisioning outcomes and generating ideas while cultivating a talented staff to actually execute plans and run projects.

Good managers work methodically and tackle immediate goals, but they say leaders must display high energy, fully engage in daily life inside the company and internalize the CEO's broader agenda.
